We are looking for a qualified

Intern in the Department of Crop Sciences -
Focus on Plant Breeding / Resistance Testing in Legumes (100%)

Topics/Work:
Together with national and international partners, FiBL carries out projects on root rot in peas.
One goal is the development of precise molecular markers for resistance against root rot. For this purpose, various pea genotypes, including crop wild relatives, are tested for their root rot resistance in legume-depleted soil in climate chamber trials. Subsequently, the resistance data are linked with genome data and the root microbiomes are investigated in order to identify resistance-associated regions in the pea genome as well as microorganisms that can be associated with increased resistance.
Another goal is the development of a microbial product against root rot for organic farming. For this purpose, bacteria and fungi isolated from pea roots are tested in climate chamber trials for their potential to suppress root rot.

As an intern, you will play a major role in conducting the climate chamber trials (preparation, sowing, care, assessment of root rot, harvest, and sampling) and will learn various methods in the process. In addition, you will assist in other projects of the Plant Breeding group if required. These may include field, pot, and laboratory trials for resistance and legume breeding.

Duration & Start:
6 months / Beginning of January 2027 or by arrangement

Requirements:
Interest in practice-oriented research in the fields of plant breeding and phytopathology as well as experience with climate chamber, greenhouse, and/or laboratory experiments is desirable. Independent, motivated, and careful way of working. Enjoyment of precise, partly repetitive work with many plants. Driver's license is an advantage. Valid permit or EU/EFTA citizens.
