In this context, the HUG offer a pre-HES internship in Life Sciences Engineering, with a view to admission to the Bachelor of Science HES-SO in Life Sciences Engineering at the HES-SO Valais-Wallis – Haute École d’Ingénierie.

This internship allows the intern to concretely discover the functioning of a hospital laboratory, to become familiar with working methods in a professional environment, and to develop practical skills in the field of life sciences.

Pre-HES Internship – Life Sciences Engineering – 100%
Within the Service de pathologie clinique of the HUG, you will join the team of the Laboratoire de pathologie tissulaire et cellulaire and discover the different stages of the management, treatment, and analysis of biological samples in histology and cytology.

As part of your internship, under the supervision of qualified professionals, you will participate in the practical and technical activities of the anatomical pathology laboratory. You will thus be sensitized to the organization of a laboratory, working methods, analytical processes, as well as requirements regarding quality, safety, and traceability.

You will discover and participate in the different stages of tissue preparation, including fixation, dehydration, paraffin inclusion, and the production of histological sections.

You will participate in the preparation of slides and their digitalization and discover the main staining techniques used in anatomical pathology.

You will discover the principles and applications of different analytical techniques used in pathology, notably immunohistochemistry.

You will discover the quality control principles applied to the different stages of the analysis processes.

You will participate in laboratory meetings and training colloquiums in order to better understand the laboratory organization, work processes, and the links between the different activities.

You will apply the rules of hygiene, safety, quality, confidentiality, and environmental protection specific to a medical laboratory.

During this internship, you will develop rigorous working methods, your autonomy, and your ability to work in a team. You will become familiar with the organization and requirements of a specialized laboratory and concretely discover the different professions and skills necessary for its operation.

This experience will allow you to better understand the professional reality of a hospital laboratory and to confirm your interest in training in the field of Life Sciences Engineering.

Qualifications

You meet the admission requirements or are in the process of the admission process for the Bachelor of Science HES-SO in Life Sciences Engineering at the HES-SO Valais-Wallis – Haute École d’Ingénierie.

You have good basic knowledge in natural sciences, particularly in biology, chemistry, and/or physics.

You demonstrate a real interest in life sciences, laboratory techniques, and scientific applications.

You are curious, motivated, and wish to concretely discover the functioning of a professional laboratory.

You demonstrate rigor, precision, and a good analytical mind.

You possess an aptitude for teamwork and are able to adapt to a professional environment.

You are sensitive to questions of safety, quality, and sustainability within the framework of laboratory work.

Job Particularities

The objective of this internship is to allow the intern to face the professional reality of a laboratory and to acquire the basic techniques and methods of working in a company or laboratory.

The proposed activity notably allows for the development of knowledge in the fields of analytics and quality control, as well as becoming familiar with the methods and processes used in a specialized laboratory.

Your supervision is provided by qualified and experienced professionals, sensitized to the internship objectives and the support of interns.

You will evolve in a demanding scientific and technical environment, favoring learning, autonomy, and the development of practical skills.

You will discover the organization and functioning of a laboratory, the different professions represented therein, as well as the requirements related to quality, safety, traceability, and confidentiality.

This experience allows you to develop confidence in your abilities and to confirm your interest in a Bachelor HES-SO training in Life Sciences Engineering.
