Your mission

The objective of the internship is to contribute to the construction and industrialization of the Hospice général Data Platform, a fully open source Lakehouse infrastructure deployed on Kubernetes, ensuring that each data product brings concrete added value to our beneficiaries and our female and male collaborators. Your mission will be to design and secure end-to-end data pipelines, to challenge the technological choices of the platform and to test them on precise and measurable business use cases.

Within the information systems and digital department, you will work within the Data Intelligence Product team to design, build and secure these data products within their social usage context.

Your main activities

  • You will actively participate in the construction of the platform and the delivery of the first high-value-added data products.
  • You will contribute to the implementation and evolution of the Data Platform components (ingestion with Apache NiFi and RedPanda, storage Apache Iceberg on S3, Nessie / Polaris catalog, Trino querying, …).
  • You will design and test end-to-end data pipelines, from Bronze and Silver layers to the Gold layer, on concrete business use cases.
  • You will develop dbt transformations and associated quality tests (freshness, compliance with Data Contracts, referential integrity, business rules, non-regression).
  • You will write and evolve Data Contracts in connection with data producers and consumers.
  • You will contribute to the observability of the platform (Prometheus metrics, Loki logs, Grafana dashboards and alerts) and to the monitoring of pipeline SLAs.
  • You will compare and challenge available technological solutions and formulate reasoned recommendations.
  • You will be proactive in order to make data a lever of value for our beneficiaries and our female and male collaborators, and to promote its adoption (dashboards, documentation and user support).

Methodologies used:

  • Use of agentic AI (development agents, tool orchestration, MCP protocol, …) to accelerate and secure data work: generation and review of dbt / SQL code, writing of Data Contracts and tests, documentation, incident analysis, while respecting data confidentiality.
  • Three-layer Lakehouse architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold), based exclusively on open source technologies.
  • Batch and streaming data ingestion with Apache NiFi and RedPanda from on-premise source systems (ERP, business IS, files).
  • S3-compatible object storage and Apache Iceberg open table format, Nessie / Polaris catalog allowing Git-like data branching.
  • Transformation with dbt and SQL, Data Contracts (YAML) approach and five-level quality test pyramid.
  • Querying and restitution with Trino and Metabase.
  • Development with Python and SQL for integration, automation and testing.
  • Deployment on Kubernetes via Helm charts and a GitOps approach (Flux CD), CI/CD with Azure DevOps and JFrog Artifactory, isolated DEV, QUAL and PROD environments.
  • End-to-end observability with Prometheus, Loki and Grafana.
  • Security by design: authentication, RBAC, encryption, secrets management and integration into SIEM/SOC.
  • Governance and protection of personal data in a social action context.

Your profile

Currently undergoing Master's level training in a computer science, data engineering, data science or related field (HES, university or EPFL)

Skills sought:

  • Solid knowledge in SQL, data modeling and Python programming.
  • Interest in modern data architectures: Lakehouse, open table formats (Iceberg, Delta Lake), transformation tools (dbt).
  • Notions of batch and streaming data ingestion and processing (ETL / ELT, Kafka, NiFi, …).
  • Practice of Git and awareness of CI/CD and DevOps / GitOps processes.
  • Notions of containerization (Docker).
  • Sensitivity to data quality (tests, contracts, documentation).
  • Understanding of security and data confidentiality issues.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
  • Proactive and search for innovative solutions.
  • Ability to popularize complex technical concepts.

Type of contract: University internship

Start date: February 2027

Duration of internship: 6 months

Activity rate: 100%

Application deadline: 2 November 2026

Please submit your complete file (CV, cover letter, diploma of the highest level of education, work certificates)

At the Hospice général, we work for better living together in Geneva

Founded in 1535 in Geneva, our institution supports people who, at a point in their lives, need support for the necessary time to (re)find lasting autonomy. We promote the social and professional reintegration of people receiving social assistance, we welcome and house people from asylum who we follow in their integration journey. Finally, we participate in the fight against isolation of seniors.

We are more than 1’ 500 female and male collaborators distributed across 60 sites throughout the territory of the canton. We support more than 35’ 000 people.

By joining our institution, you will participate in the realization of our social mission, anchored in our values of collaboration, respect, commitment and benevolence.

In a context where our teams evolve in demanding and constantly changing fields, we make a point of offering them stimulating working conditions: we aim for diversity and inclusion, we value collective intelligence, we encourage
